Armand Campi (1942-2008) was born in France and raised in Cuba. He returns to Europe to live in Spain and France. At age the age of 16 Campi ventures out on his own to Paris. It is the late 1950s, the decade of existentialism, a school of thought that strongly influences his art and thinking throughout his life. During his stay in Paris, Campi takes drawing lessons at the famous art school La Grande Chaumière, in Montparnasse. It was the only art course he ever took; apart from La Grande Chaumière he is fully autodidact. Already at age seventeen, Campi participates in a group exhibition at the Galerie Lambert in Paris. This will be the first of many exhibitions to come in both Europe and the U.S.A.
