Judith Sobel (1924-2012) Born in Lodz, Poland. Lived and worked in Israel and later in New York USA. She attended the Academy of fine arts in Lodz, where she studied with Abstract Constructionist Stefan Wegner. From him she learned the principles of Modern art as laid down by the European Cubists. Sobel’s work was selected for the First Exhibit of Modern Art in Krakow in 1948-1949.
From Poland, she emigrated to the Israel where she lived for five years, becoming very active in the newly-founded country’s emerging art world. Her work was collected and exhibited by the major art museums of Israel including the Museum of Modern Art at Haifa, and regularly shown in Israeli galleries before she came to New York on a scholarship in 1956. In 1956, a solo exhibit of her paintings was presented at the Jewish Museum in New York. Her Post-Impressionist style shows the influence of Matisse, Bonnard and Braque.
